Petition for a Fair Wage Policy for the City of Ottawa
I/We the undersigned, petition the Mayor, Ottawa City Council, and the City of Ottawa as follows:
A Fair Wage Policy will help to protect against awarding construction contracts to contractors whose competitive advantage is based on exploiting pools of vulnerable labour, improperly styling workers as sub-contractors to evade payroll and labour standards obligations, and cutting corners on training, health and safety. A Fair Wage Policy helps foster a level playing field for legitimate contractors—both union and non-union. It encourages competition based on productivity, efficiency and quality. It helps to protect good-paying jobs for local people, and to prevent a race to the bottom. Therefore, we ask that City of Ottawa construction projects above $1.5 million in value have a strong Fair Wage Policy applied to them, and that this policy comes into force not later than the end of 2027.
